And grace will lead me home (Amazing Grace, John Newton)
As we age, our horizons turn to different things than we focused on in our youth. The information here is intended to help you navigate those horizons in ways that suit you and your family.
According to a wide range of experts, planning is key. It ensures that your wishes are carried out, whatever your health and circumstances. It saves your loved ones from agony because they know that they are carrying out your wishes. And it gives all concerned, including you, a feeling of peace and serenity. |
Home Updates
Would you like to age in place in your own home? Updates to your home’s interior and exterior can make your home safer and more convenient for you to live in. Learn more from AARP (www.aarp.org, 1-888-Our ARRP), the National Council on Aging (www.ncoa.org, 571-527-3900), the Center for Disease Control (www.cdc.gov) or Rebuilding Together (www.rebuildingtogether.org 1-800-473-4229).
Legally Speaking
Aging brings with it new legal challenges. Is your will up to date? Do you have a medical directive? Does someone in your family have a durable power of attorney? Tony Nester of Ascension and St. Agnes, an attorney, would be glad to chat with you about what’s best for you and your family in your circumstance (703-553-9099). The American Bar Association or state bar associations can often help you find free legal advice in your area (www.aba.org, 800-285-2221).
If you would like to remember Ascension and St. Agnes as you plan your estate, two brochures may be useful: The Endowment Fund of Ascension and St. Agnes and Planned Giving. Either or both can be requested from the parish office ([email protected], 202-347-8161).
Funerals and Memorial Services
As of July 2020, the Diocese of Washington guidelines direct rectors to hold only graveside services, with 10 or fewer people in attendance. The Diocese hopes that this will change as the coronavirus subsides in our area. For now, though, it is in effect.
A complete guide to funerals and memorial services is available through the parish.
Please contact the parish administrator ([email protected]) for an electronic or printed copy.
